How to Avoid the "New Year, New Me" Mentality?

Well, we are currently in the double-digit days of the New Year. How many of us can say we actually stuck with our goals or something new? 🙋

"Brand New Year, New Me."

So what's wrong with the "New Year, New Me" mentality? Well, I am happy you asked. The"New Year, New Me," mentality is the result of choices and situations that were made in the prior year. Which we have an inclination that the choices aren't the best yet, we do it anyway. As people, we make a snap decision that I am going to start over January 1st.

Chile, bye! Here are some reasons why it's just not realistic:

  • Change will not happen overnight. Supposedly, it takes at least 21 days to build a habit. I believe it takes at least 30 days. Yet, think about growth, as a child, I was so in a rush to grow up I couldn't wait till I was 18. It seemed as if I would stay young forever. Now, I am an adult who tells younger people to enjoy your youth. Things and CHANGE take time. Don't rush yourself.

  • Your past cannot be erased. Learn from your past. Though those past situations or people may have not been the best and you may want to start new. It doesn't mean you leave what you learned from the experiences behind. Those experiences have helped change you I hope for the better or at least you have learned something from them. That is important.

"When you know better you do better."

  • Be Honest with yourself. Set realistic expectations and keep it real with yourself. You don't have anything to prove to anyone but yourself. Take it one day at a time and work towards being a better you.

  • Give yourself freedom As I stated above change will not happen overnight. Give yourself the freedom to reflect, to get to know who you are before you allowed people, things. and society to change you. Take out time for yourself and allow yourself to heal. Be free.

I've learned and I included myself as I'm not a perfect person, I use to have the same mentality. But I have taken the time to work towards goals or changes throughout the year. This allows me to track my progress in my journal and reflect back over the year of the changes I made.

I challenge each and every one of you to take your time. Find and continue to look for a "Newness" within yourself. Change can happen but it takes time, changes in habits, and self-reflection. Take a look in the mirror to ensure that you are living the best life possible and incorporating ways that will help you become a better you.

Will this be easy?

But instead of shrinking back into the "New Year, New Me" mentality take on getting to know you, being free, and being a light to others but most importantly for yourself.
